How this is worked out

Net N Needed = Gross Target N - (Legume Credit + Soil OM Credit) · Fertilizer Weight = Net N ÷ (N% ÷ 100)

Accounts for commercial fertilizer grades (Urea 46-0-0, Ammonium Sulfate 21-0-0, Calcium Nitrate 15.5-0-0, UAN solutions) and nitrogen credits.

Assumptions

  • Pure Urea (46-0-0) should be incorporated or watered in with at least 0.5 inches of moisture to prevent up to 30% ammonia volatilization.
  • Each 1% of soil organic matter (SOM) mineralizes approximately 10–20 lbs of plant-available nitrogen per acre (approx. 0.25–0.5 lbs N / 1,000 sq ft) annually.
  • Previous alfalfa or clover cover crops provide 30 to 60 lbs N / acre (0.7 to 1.4 lbs N / 1,000 sq ft) in nitrogen credits.
  • Lawn turf should receive no more than 0.7 to 1.0 lb of quick-release nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft in a single application to prevent surge growth and leaching.

The Agronomy of Nitrogen Management

Nitrogen (N) is the most yield-limiting nutrient in plant agriculture. It is the core constituent of amino acids, proteins, and the green chlorophyll molecule that drives photosynthesis. However, nitrogen is also the most chemically dynamic element in the soil: it easily leaches as nitrate (NO₃⁻), volatilizes into the atmosphere as ammonia gas (NH₃), or converts to nitrous oxide under anaerobic conditions.

How to Calculate Nitrogen Credits

Fertilizing without taking soil organic matter (SOM) and crop rotation credits into account results in over-application, excessive vegetative leafiness, reduced fruit set, and ground water nitrate contamination.

Legume Cover Crop Credits

Legumes associate with symbiotic Rhizobium bacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen gas (N₂). Terminating an established stand of hairy vetch, crimson clover, or alfalfa returns 30 to 80 lbs of available N per acre (0.7 to 1.8 lbs N / 1,000 sq ft) to the following vegetable or corn crop.

Soil Organic Matter (SOM) Mineralization Credits

In biologically active, warm, aerated soils, each 1% of SOM mineralizes approximately 10 to 20 lbs of pure Nitrogen per acre throughout the summer growing season. A fertile garden soil with 5% SOM provides up to 1.5 lbs N / 1,000 sq ft naturally.

Three Worked Examples

1. Lawn Turf (5,000 sq ft) with Urea (46-0-0)

Target: 1.0 lb pure N per 1,000 sq ft (5.0 lbs pure N total). Urea is 46% N (0.46). Urea required = 5.0 ÷ 0.46 = 10.87 lbs of Urea product (2.17 lbs product per 1,000 sq ft). Apply with a rotary broadcast spreader and irrigate with 0.25 inches of water immediately.

2. Sweet Corn (1 Acre) with Ammonium Sulfate (21-0-0) after Clover Cover Crop

Gross target: 120 lbs N/acre. Clover cover crop credit: 45 lbs N/acre. Net N needed = 120 - 45 = 75 lbs N/acre. Ammonium sulfate is 21% N (0.21). Product needed = 75 ÷ 0.21 = 357.1 lbs (approx. 7 fifty-pound bags). This also delivers 85.7 lbs of plant-available Sulfur.

3. Greenhouse Fertigation with Liquid UAN-32 (32-0-0)

Target: 35 lbs pure N. UAN-32 delivers 3.54 lbs N per liquid gallon. Volume required = 35 ÷ 3.54 = 9.89 gallons of UAN-32 concentrate injected through the irrigation system.

Natural Nitrogen Fixation with Green Manures

Rather than relying entirely on manufactured bags, growers can grow their own high-grade natural nitrogen using leguminous green manures. Hairy vetch, crimson clover, Austrian winter peas, and cowpeas form symbiotic associations with native Rhizobium bacteria in their root nodules. These bacteria capture inert atmospheric nitrogen gas (N₂) and convert it directly into plant-usable organic amino acids. Incorporating a robust stand of blooming hairy vetch into the soil before planting tomatoes or corn reliably contributes 100 to 200 lbs of free, non-leaching natural nitrogen per acre.

Common Nitrogen Application Mistakes

  • Surface broadcasting dry Urea in warm, dry conditions: Soil urease enzymes rapidly hydrolyze urea into ammonia gas (NH₃). If not incorporated into the soil or washed in with water within 48 hours, up to 30% of your nitrogen fertilizer is lost to the atmosphere.
  • Over-fertilizing tomatoes, peppers, and squash with early nitrogen: Excessive nitrogen causes vigorous lush green vine growth ("bullish plants") at the expense of blossom set, causing flower drop and delayed fruiting.
  • Applying all nitrogen in a single early-spring pass on sandy soil: Nitrate ions do not bind to sand particles. Heavy spring rains leach nitrate past the shallow root zone into groundwater before plants can take it up. Split applications into 2 to 3 side-dressings.

What is the difference between Nitrate-N (NO₃⁻) and Ammonium-N (NH₄⁺)?

Plants absorb nitrogen in two forms: Nitrate (NO₃⁻) and Ammonium (NH₄⁺). Nitrate is negatively charged and stays dissolved in soil water, making it immediately available to roots but prone to leaching in sandy soil. Ammonium is positively charged (NH₄⁺) and binds tightly to clay and organic matter exchange sites, resisting leaching until converted to nitrate by nitrifying soil bacteria.

How do I calculate a Nitrogen Credit for previous legume crops?

Legumes (peas, beans, clover, vetch, alfalfa) fix atmospheric nitrogen in root nodules. When plowed down or terminated, a dense stand of hairy vetch or red clover leaves 40 to 80 lbs of available nitrogen per acre (approx. 1.0 to 1.8 lbs N / 1,000 sq ft) for the following crop, reducing your needed purchased fertilizer dollar-for-dollar.

Why does Ammonium Sulfate acidify soil faster than Urea?

Ammonium Sulfate ((NH₄)₂SO₄) releases two hydrogen (H⁺) ions for every ammonium ion oxidized to nitrate during nitrification (NH₄⁺ + 2O₂ → NO₃⁻ + 2H⁺ + H₂O). It is the most acidifying common nitrogen source, making it ideal for blueberries, conifers, and high-pH soils.
