How this is worked out

weekly water (in) = base rate × soil factor × weather factor × sun factor · gallons = area (sq ft) × inches × 0.623

0.623 is the standard conversion: one inch of water over one square foot is about 0.623 US gallons. Frequency is then back-calculated from how much water a single deep watering delivers for that plant category, so the weekly total and the schedule agree with each other.

Assumptions

  • Base rates are general starting points from common extension guidance, not a soil-moisture reading of your actual garden.
  • Deep, infrequent watering is assumed throughout — it grows deeper roots than frequent shallow watering and is what the frequency figure is built around.
  • Rain is not subtracted automatically. If you had a soaking rain this week, skip or delay the next scheduled watering.
  • Establishing plants (first season) need more frequent water than these figures, which assume an established planting.

Watering deeply, not often

A quick daily sprinkle wets the top inch of soil and evaporates by afternoon, training roots to stay shallow and the plant to need watering every single day. A deep, less frequent soaking pushes moisture down, and roots follow it — which is what lets a plant handle a hot day or a missed watering without wilting.

Checking the soil beats any schedule

Push a finger two inches into the soil before watering. Still moist, wait a day. Dry, water deeply — for a vegetable bed, until the soil is damp six to eight inches down, or until water runs from a container's drainage holes. This calculator gives a starting frequency; your soil gives the real answer on any given day.

Mulch cuts watering frequency

Two to four inches of organic mulch — bark, wood chips, straw or shredded leaves — shades the soil surface and slows evaporation significantly, often stretching the gap between waterings by several days in hot weather. It also moderates soil temperature and adds organic matter as it breaks down. Keep it a few inches clear of stems to avoid rot.

When these numbers don't apply

  • Newly planted anything. First-season plants need more frequent water regardless of type while their root systems establish — treat these figures as a floor, not a target, for the first few months.
  • Containers. Pots dry out much faster than ground soil and often need daily attention in hot weather regardless of what the plant type would suggest in open ground.
  • After heavy rain. The schedule doesn't know it rained. Skip or delay the next watering and check the soil instead.
  • Fruiting and flowering stages. Tomatoes, squash and similar crops often want more consistent moisture right as fruit is setting — a dry spell then can cause blossom drop or blossom-end rot.

Three worked examples

A 6 × 8 ft vegetable bed, loam soil, mild weather, partial sun

Baseline conditions give 1.5 inches per week — on 48 sq ft that's 44.9 gallons a week, applied roughly every 5 days.

The same size vegetable bed, sandy soil, hot weather, full sun

Every factor pushes the same direction — sandy drains fast, heat raises demand, full sun adds more. The weekly need nearly doubles to 2.81 inches, and on a 32 sq ft bed that's 56 gallons a week, applied roughly every 2 days instead of 5.

An established shrub, clay soil, cool weather, shade

Every factor now works the other way — clay holds water, cool weather slows evaporation, shade cuts demand further. Need drops to 0.48 inches per week, which the calculator caps at watering every 14 days — in practice, close to relying on rainfall alone.

Reading the signs instead of the schedule

A schedule is a starting point; the plant tells you the real answer. Both overwatering and underwatering can look similar from a distance — wilting, yellowing leaves — which is why checking the soil matters more than the symptom on the leaf.

Signs of underwatering

  • Leaves wilt in the heat of the day but recover by evening.
  • Soil pulls away from the edges of a pot or bed.
  • Lower, older leaves yellow and drop first.
  • Growth slows or stalls without other obvious cause.

Signs of overwatering

  • Leaves wilt despite visibly moist soil.
  • Yellowing spreads across the whole plant, not just older leaves.
  • Soil smells sour, or algae/moss forms on the surface.
  • Roots at the pot's drainage holes look brown and mushy, not white and firm.

Common questions

How much water does a vegetable garden need per week?

About 1 to 1.5 inches per week under average conditions, roughly 0.6 gallons per square foot. In hot, dry weather that can rise to 2 inches or more; in cool, cloudy weather it can drop below an inch. Deep, infrequent watering beats a daily light sprinkle — it grows roots downward instead of keeping them near the surface.

Is it better to water daily or deeply a few times a week?

Deeply, a few times a week. Frequent shallow watering keeps roots near the surface, where they dry out fast and the plant becomes dependent on constant watering. Watering less often but more thoroughly encourages roots to grow down after the moisture, which makes the plant more resilient to a missed day.

How do I convert inches of water to gallons?

Multiply the area in square feet by the inches of water, then by 0.623. A 4×8 bed (32 sq ft) getting 1.5 inches needs 32 × 1.5 × 0.623 ≈ 30 gallons that week.

Do established trees and shrubs need weekly watering?

Once established — usually after the first one to two growing seasons — most trees and shrubs in a temperate climate rely mainly on rainfall and only need supplemental watering during extended dry spells. Newly planted ones need regular deep watering through their first year regardless of rainfall.
