Harvested Volume (Gal) = Roof Footprint (sq ft) × Rainfall Depth (in) × 0.6233 × Runoff Coefficient

Where 0.6233 is the hydrological constant converting 1 inch of rain over 1 square foot into gallons. Runoff coefficient (C) ranges from 0.80 for asphalt shingles to 0.95 for metal roofs.

Assumptions

  • Catchment area is the flat horizontal footprint of the roof draining into the gutter downspout, not the pitched surface area.

Sizing an effective rain barrel system requires matching the effective roof drainage area with local storm precipitation depths and downstream garden irrigation demand.

The 0.623 Gallon-Per-Square-Foot Catchment Rule

One inch of rainfall over 1.0 square foot of horizontal surface produces exactly 0.0833 cubic feet of water. Converted to volume (1 cu ft = 7.48052 gallons), this yields the standard hydrologic constant:

Full 100% roof catchment into a single gutter = 200 sq ft. Metal roof coefficient = 0.95. Harvested Volume = 200 × 1.0 × 0.6233 × 0.95 = 118 Gallons. Fills two 55-gallon drums or one 100-gallon tank with 18 gallons of overflow.

3. Half-Roof Array with 275-Gallon IBC Tote (800 sq ft Catchment, 0.75″ Storm)

Common Rain Barrel Mistakes

  • Under-sizing the overflow port: When a heavy 2-inch storm hits, water rushes down the downspout at 15 to 20 GPM. A standard 3/4-inch garden hose overflow cannot handle this volume, causing the barrel top to flood and erode foundations. Use a 2-inch or 3-inch overflow pipe.
  • Placing barrels directly on soft dirt: A full 55-gallon barrel weighs over 460 lbs (210 kg). Setting it directly on uncompacted soil causes uneven settling, tipping, and cracked fittings. Always build a level cinderblock or gravel base.
  • Skipping mosquito screening: Stagnant rain barrel water becomes a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes within 7 days. Ensure all inlet ports and overflow tubes are sealed with fine 1/16-inch stainless steel wire mesh.
