Common Rain Barrel Mistakes
- Under-sizing the overflow port: When a heavy 2-inch storm hits, water rushes down the downspout at 15 to 20 GPM. A standard 3/4-inch garden hose overflow cannot handle this volume, causing the barrel top to flood and erode foundations. Use a 2-inch or 3-inch overflow pipe.
- Placing barrels directly on soft dirt: A full 55-gallon barrel weighs over 460 lbs (210 kg). Setting it directly on uncompacted soil causes uneven settling, tipping, and cracked fittings. Always build a level cinderblock or gravel base.
- Skipping mosquito screening: Stagnant rain barrel water becomes a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes within 7 days. Ensure all inlet ports and overflow tubes are sealed with fine 1/16-inch stainless steel wire mesh.
