Understanding Soil Infiltration & Drainage Classes
Soil drainage determines how rapidly excess gravitational water moves downward through the soil profile after rain or irrigation. When drainage is too fast, sandy soils lose mobile nutrients (nitrate, potassium, boron) into groundwater and plants suffer constant drought stress. When drainage is too slow, clay soils stay saturated, suffocating roots and fostering fatal fungal root rots.

How to Fix Poorly Draining Soil
- 1. Raised Garden Beds (8 to 12 inches height)
- The fastest solution for vegetable gardeners. Elevating the root zone above saturated subsoil allows gravitational water to exit the bed frame freely, ensuring roots remain well-oxygenated even in heavy rain.
- 2. Subsurface French Drains
- For flat lawns or low spots where water ponds, dig an 18-inch deep trench on a 1% slope, line it with non-woven geotextile fabric, lay a 4-inch perforated PVC pipe, and fill with 3/4-inch washed gravel.
- 3. Organic Matter & Gypsum Incorporation
- Adding 2 to 3 inches of finished compost and agricultural gypsum (40 lbs/1k sq ft) to clay soil binds microscopic clay platelets into granular aggregates, permanently opening macropores.
Three Worked Examples
1. Home Garden Perc Test (1.5 inches drop in 60 minutes)
Infiltration rate = 1.5 in ÷ 1.0 hr = 1.50 in/hr (38.1 mm/hr). Classification: Well-Drained. Ideal for tomatoes, peppers, fruit trees, and lawn turf without any drainage modifications.
2. Heavy Clay Lawn Perc Test (0.25 inches drop in 60 minutes)
Infiltration rate = 0.25 in/hr (6.35 mm/hr). Classification: Somewhat Poorly Drained. Recommended action: Core aerate the lawn annually and topdress with compost; build raised beds for vegetables.
3. French Drain Trench (50 ft long, 12 in wide, 18 in deep)
Trench volume = 50 ft × 1.0 ft × 1.5 ft = 75 cu ft = 2.78 cu yds. Minus 4-inch pipe volume (4.36 cu ft), net gravel needed = 2.62 cu yds (approx. 3.54 tons of 3/4" washed drain rock). Requires 200 sq ft of filter fabric.
Ecological Drainage: Rain Gardens & Bioswales
Instead of piping excess runoff off-site into storm drains, building a shallow planted rain garden turns drainage challenges into lush habitat. Sizing a 6-inch deep basin filled with sandy loam and compost, planted with deep-rooted native perennials and wetland rushes (such as Blue Flag Iris, Joe Pye Weed, and Carex sedges), allows standing puddles to filter naturally into deep subsoil within 24 to 48 hours without breeding mosquitoes.
