How this is worked out

net chill hours = (avg daily chill hours × dormant days) − warm-spell negation loss

Deciduous fruit and nut trees require a minimum number of winter chilling hours between 32°F and 45°F to break bud endodormancy and produce uniform spring blossom. Hours lost to mid-winter warm spells are subtracted from the accumulated total.

Assumptions

  • Temperatures below 32°F (0°C) and above 45°F (7.2°C) do not contribute to chill-hour accumulation.
  • Hours during mid-winter warm spells above 60°F (15.5°C) can negate previously accumulated chill hours; enter this loss in the "Warm Spells Negation Loss" field.
  • Inadequate chilling results in delayed foliation, protracted bloom, sparse fruit set, and misshapen fruit.

Deciduous fruit and nut trees enter a protective winter dormancy state known as endodormancy to survive freezing conditions. To break endodormancy and trigger synchronized blossom burst and uniform fruit set in spring, flower buds must experience a specific accumulated threshold of cold winter temperatures known as Winter Chill Hours.

1. Standard 32°F–45°F (0°C–7.2°C) Model (Weinberger)
The traditional model counts every full hour spent between 32°F and 45°F as 1.0 chill hour. Hours below 32°F (freezing temperatures where metabolic activity ceases) and hours above 45°F are counted as zero.
2. Utah Weighted Model (Richardson)
Assigns weighted chill units based on biological effectiveness: 1.0 unit between 35°F and 44°F; 0.5 units at 45°F–51°F; 0 units below 34°F; and subtracts -1.0 chill unit for every hour temperatures exceed 65°F (18°C) during unseasonal mid-winter warm spells.

Consequences of Chilling Hour Mismatches

Matching nursery rootstocks to regional winter chilling prevents severe orchard crop failure:

  • Under-Chilled Trees (High-Chill Tree in Warm Zone): Buds fail to open uniformly in spring. Shoots exhibit "delayed foliation" and bare branch tips; blossoms open erratically over 6 weeks with poor cross-pollination.
