Product Weight = Limiting Target Nutrient Rate ÷ (Nutrient % ÷ 100) × Treatment Area ÷ Area Base

Calculates complete fertilizer requirements by matching your target nutrient and displaying exact surplus or deficit for the other two macro-nutrients.

Assumptions

  • Complete fertilizers (e.g. 10-10-10) supply N, P₂O₅, and K₂O in fixed ratios, which rarely match exact crop uptake ratios.
  • When formulating on a nitrogen basis with balanced fertilizers, soils with high baseline phosphorus may receive unwanted surplus phosphate.
  • Heavy feeders (sweet corn, brassicas, tomatoes) require split applications: 30% at planting and 70% as side-dressings during peak vegetative growth.

Calculating crop fertilizer requirements requires balancing three competing variables: the crop’s biological macro-nutrient uptake ratio, the native soil’s available baseline fertility, and the manufactured N-P-K analysis of your chosen fertilizer product. When complete fertilizers (such as 10-10-10 or 13-13-13) are used, applying enough product to satisfy nitrogen demand often over-supplies phosphorus or under-supplies potassium.

2. Sweet Corn (2,000 sq ft) with 13-13-13 on Medium Fertility Soil

Target: 3.0 lbs N per 1,000 sq ft (6.0 lbs N total). Product weight = 6.0 ÷ 0.13 = 46.15 lbs of 13-13-13 (one 50-lb bag). Delivers 6.0 lbs N, 6.0 lbs P₂O₅, and 6.0 lbs K₂O.

3. Carrot & Beet Bed (500 sq ft) with 5-10-10 High-P/K Starter

Formulating for Phosphate target (0.9 lbs P₂O₅ for 500 sq ft): Product weight = 0.9 ÷ 0.10 = 9.0 lbs of 5-10-10. Delivers 0.45 lbs N (preventing hairy forked carrots) and 0.90 lbs K₂O.

While matching primary N-P-K ratios is critical for target crop yields, true regenerative fertility treats the soil as a living organism. Common questions

What does Liebig’s Law of the Minimum mean for fertilizer application?

Liebig’s Law of the Minimum states that crop growth is dictated not by total available soil nutrients, but by the scarcest nutrient (the limiting factor). If your soil is deficient in potassium, adding more nitrogen and phosphorus will not increase yield until the potassium deficiency is corrected.

Why does 10-10-10 often over-apply phosphorus in established gardens?

Crops typically consume nitrogen and potassium in roughly equal amounts, but consume only 15% to 25% as much phosphorus (a 4-1-3 uptake ratio). Using a 1:1:1 ratio fertilizer like 10-10-10 year after year supplies 4 times more phosphorus than plants remove, causing gradual phosphorus saturation and micronutrient lockup.

How do I split fertilizer applications between planting and side-dressing?
