How to calculate 3D garden volumes, materials & haul weights
Accurately computing three-dimensional garden volume is essential for ordering landscaping materials like topsoil, compost, pea gravel, and decorative mulch. Underestimating volume leaves beds under-filled, while overestimating wastes money and risks exceeding pickup truck payload limits during transport.
Geometric Volume Formulas for Landscape Beds
To compute volume accurately, calculate the two-dimensional surface footprint in square feet, convert the depth into feet (inches ÷ 12), and multiply:
- Rectangular Bed: Volume = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft)
- Circular Bed: Volume = π × [Diameter ÷ 2]² × Depth (ft)
- Triangular Bed: Volume = 0.5 × Base (ft) × Height (ft) × Depth (ft)
- Oval / Elliptical Bed: Volume = π × [Major Length ÷ 2] × [Minor Width ÷ 2] × Depth (ft)
Landscaping Material Densities & Haul Weights
Different bulk materials vary dramatically in weight per cubic yard. Knowing the density prevents dangerous overloading when hauling materials in personal trailers or pickup trucks:

Bulk Units vs. Bagged Packaging Equivalents
- 1 Cubic Yard (yd³) = 27 Cubic Feet (ft³)
- One cubic yard equals 13.5 bags (2.0 cu ft), 18 bags (1.5 cu ft), or 36 bags (0.75 cu ft). In metric units, 1 cubic yard equals 764.55 Liters or 0.765 cubic meters.
Three Worked Examples
1. Filling a Large Rectangular Vegetable Bed (20 ft × 4 ft × 8 inches deep) with Topsoil
Surface area = 80 sq ft. Depth = 8 ÷ 12 = 0.667 ft. Volume = 80 × 0.667 = 53.33 cu ft. Plus 10% compaction settling = 58.67 cu ft (2.17 cubic yards). At 2,200 lbs/yd³, total weight is approx. 4,774 lbs (2.39 tons)—order delivery by a commercial dump truck.
2. Circular Flower Bed (10 ft Diameter × 3 inches deep) with Hardwood Mulch
Radius = 5 ft. Surface area = π × 5² = 78.54 sq ft. Depth = 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft. Volume = 78.54 × 0.25 = 19.64 cu ft. Plus 10% = 21.6 cu ft (0.80 cubic yards or 11 two-cu-ft bags).
3. Triangular Corner Bed (Base 12 ft × Height 8 ft × 6 inches deep) with Compost
Surface area = 0.5 × 12 × 8 = 48 sq ft. Depth = 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5 ft. Volume = 48 × 0.5 = 24.0 cu ft. Plus 10% = 26.4 cu ft (0.98 cubic yards, or approx. 18 bags of 1.5 cu ft compost).
Common Volume Calculation Mistakes
- Multiplying length and width by depth in inches directly: Multiplying feet by inches produces cubic foot-inches, creating an answer 12 times too large. Always divide inches by 12 first.
- Overloading half-ton pickup trucks with heavy gravel or wet soil: A "half-ton" pickup (F-150, Silverado 1500) has a maximum bed payload of 1,000 to 1,800 lbs. A single cubic yard of wet soil or gravel weighs 2,600+ lbs. Limit loads to 0.5 yards per trip.
- Ignoring compaction during tamping: Crushed stone and base gravel compact 15% to 20% when rolled or plate-compacted. Add a 15% material cushion for structural sub-bases.
