How this is worked out

Net Area = Σ(Bed_Area - Exclusion_Area) · Base Volume = Σ(Net_Area_i × Depth_i) · Adjusted Volume = Base_Volume × (1 + (Waste% + Settling%)/100)

All internal calculations use canonical units (square feet for area, feet for depth, cubic feet for volume). Bag purchase recommendations use ceiling(Adjusted Volume / Bag Volume) to prevent material shortages. 27 cubic feet = 1 cubic yard.

Assumptions

  • Depth is normalized to feet before volume calculation (e.g. 3 inches = 0.25 feet).
  • Bag purchase recommendations always round up to the next whole bag (ceil) to prevent under-buying.
  • Bulk deliveries use standard supplier increments (e.g. 0.5 or 1.0 cubic yard units).
  • Multi-bed calculations compute independent volumes per bed depth rather than averaging depths.

How to calculate mulch volume, depths & material coverage

Mulching is one of the most cost-effective investments in landscape maintenance. A well-maintained mulch layer cuts summer soil water evaporation by up to 50%, suppresses annual weed seed germination, insulates roots against extreme temperature swings, and gradually builds organic humus. However, calculating the correct cubic yards prevents running out mid-job or burying plants too deeply.

Mulch Coverage Rule of Thumb: The "324 Rule"

One cubic yard (27 cubic feet) covers exactly 324 square feet at a 1-inch depth. To find coverage at any depth, divide 324 by your target depth:

  • 1 Inch Deep: 1 cu yd covers 324 sq ft (Light top-up refresh)
  • 2 Inches Deep: 1 cu yd covers 162 sq ft (Annuals & perennial flower beds)
  • 3 Inches Deep: 1 cu yd covers 108 sq ft (Standard shrub borders & trees)
  • 4 Inches Deep: 1 cu yd covers 81 sq ft (Garden pathways & weed suppression)

Avoid the Deadly "Mulch Volcano"

One of the most destructive landscaping errors is piling mulch against tree trunks in a steep cone (the mulch volcano). Tree bark requires constant air circulation to stay dry. Piling moist mulch directly against the root flare softens bark, invites fungal pathogens, encourages suffocating girdling roots, and provides shelter for bark-chewing voles.

Always apply mulch in a flat donut shape: 3 to 4 inches deep across the drip line, tapering down to zero thickness within 3 to 6 inches of the exposed tree trunk root flare.

Three Worked Examples

1. Front Shrub Border (40 ft × 6 ft at 3 inches deep)

Area = 240 sq ft. Depth = 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft. Volume = 240 × 0.25 = 60.0 cu ft. Plus 10% settling = 66.0 cu ft. In cubic yards: 66 ÷ 27 = 2.44 cubic yards (or thirty-three 2-cu-ft retail bags).

2. Five Circular Tree Rings (6 ft diameter each at 3 inches deep)

Single ring radius = 3 ft. Single ring area = π × 3² = 28.27 sq ft. Minus 1 sq ft trunk area = 27.27 sq ft. For 5 rings: 136.35 sq ft. Volume at 3" (0.25 ft) = 34.09 cu ft + 10% = 37.5 cu ft (1.39 cubic yards or 19 two-cu-ft bags).

3. Garden Pathway (50 ft × 3 ft at 4 inches deep)

Area = 150 sq ft. Depth = 4 ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft. Volume = 150 × 0.333 = 50.0 cu ft. Plus 10% settling = 55.0 cu ft (2.04 cubic yards).

Common Mulching Mistakes

  • Applying fresh wood chips directly against young annual seedlings: High-carbon fresh wood chips draw available soil nitrogen to decompose at the interface (nitrogen immobilization). Apply finished compost or aged mulch around annuals instead.
  • Over-mulching greater than 4 inches in garden beds: Excessively thick mulch blankets create an anaerobic barrier, blocking rain from reaching roots and causing fine rootlets to grow upward into the mulch.
  • Failing to break up hydrophobic compacted mulch: Old dry bark mulch can develop a water-repellent fungal crust (artillery fungus). Rake and fluff existing mulch before adding a fresh top dressing.

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard of mulch?

There are exactly 27 cubic feet in 1 cubic yard of mulch (3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft = 27 ft³). A standard 2 cubic foot bag equals approximately 0.074 cubic yards.

How deep should garden mulch be applied?

For flower beds and vegetable gardens, 2 to 3 inches (5–7.5 cm) is standard. For weed suppression around trees and shrubs, 3 to 4 inches (7.5–10 cm) is recommended. Avoid applying mulch deeper than 4 inches, as it can suffocate plant roots.

Why does the calculator distinguish theoretical requirement from recommended purchase?

Mulch cannot be bought in partial bags. If your garden mathematically requires 25.37 bags, a retailer will require you to purchase 26 whole bags. The calculator displays exact theoretical volume alongside the required purchase quantity.

How does the calculator handle multiple garden beds with different depths?

Instead of averaging depths (which causes mathematical inaccuracies), the engine calculates the exact volume for each bed independently (Area × Depth) and sums the individual volumes.
