How this is worked out

total plants = bed area (sq ft) * crop density (plants per sq ft)

Square Foot Gardening divides raised beds into 1x1 foot squares, placing 1, 4, 9, or 16 plants per square based on mature crop size.

Assumptions

  • Extra large crops (squash, pumpkins, melons) require 9 sq ft per plant (0.11 plants/sq ft).
  • Large crops (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cabbage) require 1 plant per 1x1 ft square.
  • Medium crops (lettuce, spinach, bush beans) fit 4 plants per 1x1 ft square (6" grid spacing).
  • Small crops (onions, beets) fit 9 plants per 1x1 ft square (4" grid spacing).
  • Extra small crops (carrots, radishes) fit 16 plants per 1x1 ft square (3" grid spacing).

The Square Foot Gardening (SFG) system divides raised garden beds into distinct 12-inch by 12-inch (1 sq ft) modules. By eliminating wasted walking paths within the bed and grouping crops into mathematically standardized sub-grids, home gardeners harvest 100% of the yield of a traditional single-row garden in just 20% of the physical space.

The 1-4-9-16 Grid Division Equation

Sub-grid plant density per square foot is calculated by dividing 12 inches by the crop's required root and canopy spacing ($s$):

Plants per Square Foot = [12 ÷ In-Row Spacing (inches)]²

Example: Bush beans require 6-inch spacing: (12 ÷ 6)² = 2² = 4 plants per square foot. Carrots require 3-inch spacing: (12 ÷ 3)² = 4² = 16 plants per square foot.

Vertical Trellising on North Bed Margins

Vining crops (pole beans, cucumbers, indeterminate tomatoes, small winter squash) normally require 9 to 16 square feet of horizontal sprawl. By mounting rigid electrical conduit and nylon netting trellises along the northern edge of the raised bed, vining crops grow upward, reducing their footprint to just 1 square foot per plant without shading southern companion squares.

Three Worked Bed Density Calculations

1. Standard 4 ft × 4 ft (16 Square Feet) Raised Salad Bed

4 squares of carrots (64 carrots) + 4 squares of spinach (36 plants) + 4 squares of head lettuce (16 heads) + 4 squares of radishes (64 radishes) = 180 total harvestable vegetables in a 16-square-foot footprint.

2. 4 ft × 8 ft (32 Square Feet) Gourmet Market Bed

North row: 8 trellised tomatoes (8 plants). Middle two rows: 8 bush beans (32 plants) + 8 bulb onions (72 onions). South row: 4 kale (4 plants) + 4 beets (36 beets) = 152 high-yield plants.

3. Garlic Planting in 2 ft × 6 ft Raised Border (12 Sq Ft)

Hardneck garlic is planted at 9 cloves per sq ft (4" spacing). Total yield = 12 × 9 = 108 premium garlic heads.

Common Square Foot Gardening Mistakes

  • Placing tall vertical trellises on the south edge of beds: Staking 6-foot tomatoes or pole beans on the south side casts a full-day shadow over short carrots and greens. Keep trellises strictly on the north side.
  • Allowing indeterminate tomatoes to grow unpruned: In a 1-per-sq-ft grid, tomatoes must be single-stem pruned by pinching all suckers. Allowing 4 unpruned stems produces a sprawling thicket that suffocates neighboring squares.
  • Forgetting to re-amend each square after harvest: High-density crops rapidly extract nitrogen and phosphorus. When harvesting a square of lettuce, mix one trowel of rich compost into that specific square before replanting.
