Potassium (K) is the "quality nutrient" in agriculture, regulating stomatal opening and transpiration, activating over 60 enzymatic growth pathways, and conferring critical drought, disease, and winter hardiness. Unlike nitrogen and phosphorus, potassium does not become part of organic cellular structures; it remains as a free dissolved cation (K⁺) inside plant cell vacuoles, maintaining cell turgor and osmotic water pressure.

Chloride Sensitivity Hazards
While standard field crops (corn, wheat, pasture) easily tolerate the chloride in inexpensive MOP (0-0-60), chloride-sensitive crops (strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, tobacco, and container plants) suffer toxic leaf edge scorch, reduced sugar accumulation, and impaired tuber storage when fertilized with potassium chloride. Always choose Potassium Sulfate (0-0-50) or Langbeinite (0-0-22) for sensitive plantings.
Three Worked Examples
1. Lawn Turf (5,000 sq ft) with Potassium Chloride (0-0-60)
Target: 1.0 lb K₂O per 1,000 sq ft (5.0 lbs K₂O total). Product contains 60% K₂O (0.60). Product needed = 5.0 ÷ 0.60 = 8.33 lbs of 0-0-60. Delivers 4.15 lbs of pure elemental Potassium (K).
2. Strawberry Patch (1,000 sq ft) with Potassium Sulfate (0-0-50)
Target: 2.0 lbs K₂O per 1,000 sq ft. SOP contains 50% K₂O (0.50). Product needed = 2.0 ÷ 0.50 = 4.0 lbs of SOP. This is 100% chloride-free and delivers 0.68 lbs of plant-available sulfate sulfur.
3. 1 Acre Potato Field with Langbeinite (0-0-22)
Target: 80 lbs K₂O/acre. Langbeinite contains 22% K₂O (0.22). Product needed = 80 ÷ 0.22 = 363.6 lbs/acre (approx. 7.3 fifty-lb bags). Simultaneously supplies 40 lbs of Magnesium (Mg) and 80 lbs of Sulfur (S).
