Cucurbits hate root disturbance. Sow in 3-inch biodegradable peat pots exactly 3 weeks before safe outdoor planting (May 25): sow indoors on May 4.

Common Seed Starting Mistakes

  • Starting tomatoes 12 weeks too early in small cells: Seedlings become severely root-bound, yellow from nutrient starvation, and develop stunted woody stems before outdoor soils warm up. Stick strictly to 6 to 8-week lead times.
