Common Transplanting Mistakes

  • Planting root-bound plugs without untangling roots: Seedlings held too long form a solid root cage circling the bottom of the pot. Unless you gently tease and loosen outer root strands, the plant remains stunted in a tight ball.
  • Burying peppers and eggplants too deep: Unlike tomatoes, burying the stems of peppers or eggplants deeper than their nursery cell line invites stem collar rot (*Phytophthora*). Plant at the exact same depth as the nursery plug.
