How this is worked out

gross yield = area × yield rate · net yield = gross yield × (1 - loss %) × (1 - moisture %)

Field area is multiplied by standard crop yield rates, then adjusted for harvest loss and moisture shrinkage.

Accurate yield forecasts enable farmers to execute forward grain marketing contracts, calculate crop insurance claims, organize combine harvesting logistics, and budget grain bin drying and storage capacity.

The Corn Yield Component Method (University Extension Formula)

Agronomists estimate grain corn yield at the R5 (dent) growth stage using the standard yield component equation:

Estimated Corn Yield (Bu/Acre) = [Ears per 1/1,000th Acre × Avg Kernel Rows per Ear × Avg Kernels per Row] ÷ Kernel Weight Factor

Where the Kernel Weight Factor represents kernels per 56-lb bushel: use 80 to 85 for plump kernels under ideal rain, 90 for average conditions, or 100 to 110 under severe drought/stress.

The Soybean Pod & Node Method

Estimating soybean yield at the R6 (full seed) stage:

Soybean Yield (Bu/Acre) = [Total Pods per 1/1,000th Acre × Avg Seeds per Pod (usually 2.5)] ÷ Seed Weight Factor (typically 2,500 seeds/lb × 60 lbs = 150)

Example: 30 plants counted in 34'10" of 15-inch row, averaging 32 pods per plant (960 pods total). Yield = (960 × 2.5) ÷ 45 = 53.3 Bushels per Acre.

Three Worked Field Yield Scenarios

1. High-Yield Irrigated Corn Field (30-Inch Rows)

Measured 17'5" of row: 33 harvestable ears. Sampled ears average 16 kernel rows around × 36 kernels long. Yield = (33 × 16 × 36) ÷ 85 = 223.7 Bushels per Acre.

2. Dryland Wheat Yield (Head Count Method)

Sample square-yard frame: 320 wheat heads, averaging 28 kernels per head. Total kernels = 8,960. Divided by 15,000 kernels/lb = 0.597 lbs/sq yd × 4,840 sq yd/acre = 2,891 lbs ÷ 60 lbs/bu = 48.2 Bushels per Acre.

3. Commercial Market Garden Tomato Bed (100 ft × 5 ft Bed)

50 indeterminate slicing tomato plants. Average yield: 18 marketable pounds per vine across the season. Total bed yield = 50 × 18 = 900 lbs of tomatoes (approx. 36 twenty-five-pound commercial cartons).

Common Yield Estimation Mistakes

  • Sampling ears from outer field edges ("Border Effect"): Outside rows receive unobstructed 360-degree sunlight and produce oversized double ears that overestimate entire field yield by 20% to 30%. Always walk at least 100 feet deep into the interior field canopy.
  • Ignoring combine header gathering loss: Combine header cutter-bar shatter, un-threshed pods, and sieve discharge blow-out typically lose 1.0 to 2.5 bushels per acre.
  • Failing to adjust for wet grain moisture shrink: Delivering 20% moisture corn to an elevator requires deducting 5.88% of wet gross weight for standard 15.5% commercial base shrink.
