Agronomic seed rate calculation: TSW physics, population & drill calibration

Calculating precise field seeding rates is the foundation of profitable grain, oilseed, and forage crop production. Sowing too few seeds creates thin, sparse canopies that leave soil nitrogen vulnerable to leaching and allow aggressive broadleaf weeds to take over; planting excessive seed counts wastes high-cost seed treatments, induces early canopy humidity that triggers lodging, and increases fungal disease pressure.

The Thousand Seed Weight (TSW) Agronomic Formula

Because individual seed kernel size fluctuates by up to 40% between crop varieties and seasonal harvest batches, agronomists calculate seeding rates using Thousand Seed Weight (TSW / TKW in grams):

Seed Rate (kg/ha) = [Target Plants/m² × Thousand Seed Weight (grams)] ÷ [Germination Rate (decimal) × Field Survival (decimal) × 100]

Seed Rate (lbs/acre) = Seed Rate (kg/ha) × 0.89218

Example: Target stand of 250 wheat plants/m² with a seed lot of 42g TSW, 90% germination, and 85% expected field establishment: (250 × 42) ÷ (0.90 × 0.85 × 100) = 137.25 kg/ha (122.5 lbs/acre).

Seed Drill & Air Seeder Stationary Calibration

Before planting, calibrate mechanical fluted rollers or pneumatic air cart metering rolls by jacking up the drive wheel, turning it through a measured number of revolutions corresponding to 1/10th of an acre or 1/10th hectare, catching the dispensed seed in collection bags, and weighing with an accurate digital hanging scale.
Adjusting for Field Emergence Mortality
While seed tag germination is conducted under perfect 77°F laboratory conditions, actual field emergence is reduced by soil crusting, cold spring soils (<50°F), wireworms, and uneven seeding depth. Reduce expected field survival from 90% down to 70% when seeding into cold, heavy no-till clay seedbeds.

Three Worked Field Calculations

1. Winter Wheat Field (160-Acre Quarter Section)

Target stand: 300 plants/m² (1.2 million plants/acre). Certified seed tag: TSW = 38g, Germination = 95%, Field survival = 85%. Seed rate = (300 × 38) ÷ (0.95 × 0.85 × 100) = 141.2 kg/ha = 126.0 lbs/acre. Total seed required for 160 acres = 20,160 lbs (approx. 336 bushels of wheat seed).

2. High-Yield Corn Planter Drop Rate (30-Inch Rows)

Target final stand: 32,000 mature stalks/acre. Hybrid tag germination: 95%, field emergence: 95% (total survival = 90.25%). Planter seeding drop rate = 32,000 ÷ 0.9025 = 35,450 seeds/acre drop target (approx. 5.9 inches seed-to-seed drop distance).

3. Hybrid Canola Seeding Rate (Small Seed Sizing)

Canola hybrid seed lot: 4.8g TSW. Target stand: 70 plants/m². Germination: 90%, Field emergence: 65% (frost/flea beetle mortality). Required seed rate = (70 × 4.8) ÷ (0.90 × 0.65 × 100) = 5.74 kg/ha (5.12 lbs/acre).

Common Seeding Rate Mistakes

  • Seeding by volume (bushels/acre) instead of seed weight: A bushel of wheat with a high 48g TSW contains 25% fewer individual seeds than a bushel with a 36g TSW. Always calculate by thousand seed weight.
  • Ignoring tire wheel slip in mechanical drills: Slippage in loose, tilled topsoil causes ground-driven planter meters to spin slower than the tractor speed, under-seeding by 5% to 15%.
  • Increasing tractor planting speed beyond planter meter capacity: Running a corn planter at 8 mph instead of 5 mph causes meter plate cell skip, seed bounce in the drop tube, and erratic double/blank seed placement.

Thousand Seed Weight (TSW) is the weight in grams of 1,000 seeds of a crop lot, used to convert between seed count and physical seed mass.

Why should germination adjustment use division instead of subtraction?

Dividing by 0.85 (85% germination) correctly calculates the total seeds needed so that 85% of the total equals your target count. Subtracting 15% results in under-sowing.

How does row and plant spacing affect plant population?

Plant population density is inversely proportional to spacing. Multiplying row spacing by plant spacing gives the area per plant. Dividing total field area by area per plant yields total theoretical plant population.
