How this is worked out

Rect Vol (ft³) = L × W × Depth · Circle Vol (ft³) = π × r² × Depth · Cubic Yards = Vol (ft³) / 27 · Bags = CEILING(Adjusted Vol / Bag Vol)

Converts all raised bed dimensions and soil depths into base feet before multiplying to compute total volume. Applies optional settling allowance, computes soil layer recipe volumes (Topsoil, Compost, Organic Mix), and rounds bag counts up to the nearest whole bag.

Assumptions

  • Raised bed soil volume is calculated from internal bed surface area multiplied by actual soil depth.

  • Soil layer calculations divide total recommended volume mathematically by recipe percentages (must total 100%).

How to calculate soil volume and recipes for raised beds

Building raised garden beds creates ideal growing conditions by improving drainage, warming soil earlier in spring, and eliminating foot traffic compaction. However, underestimating the volume needed leads to half-empty beds where seedlings struggle for sunlight, while over-ordering leaves excess soil mounds on your driveway.

Measure the Inside Dimensions, Not the Outside Frame

Raised beds constructed from thick 2-inch lumber, composite planks, or masonry stone have internal planting dimensions significantly smaller than their outer footprint. On a standard 4 ft × 8 ft frame built from 2-inch nominal timber, the interior is actually 3.75 ft × 7.75 ft—nearly an 8% reduction in total volume. Always measure from inner board face to inner board face.

Proven Raised Bed Soil Recipes

Never fill a raised bed with pure native yard soil or unamended topsoil—it compacts heavily and restricts aeration. Choose one of these three balanced blends:

The rotting wood acts as a permanent underground moisture sponge while cutting purchased soil volume in half.

Settling Allowance: Why Adding 10% to 15% is Essential

Freshly unpacked bagged mixes and loose bulk topsoil contain significant trapped air. After the first 2 to 3 soaking irrigations or heavy rains, organic fibers compress and fine particles settle into micro-voids, causing the bed level to drop 1.5 to 2.5 inches. Always fill your bed to within 0.5 inches of the top rim and order 10% to 15% extra to cover natural settling.

Three Worked Examples

1. Two Standard 4×8 Raised Beds (12 inches deep) with 50:30:20 Recipe

Total area = 2 × 32 sq ft = 64 sq ft. Depth = 1.0 ft. Base volume = 64.0 cu ft. Plus 10% settling = 70.4 cu ft (2.61 cubic yards). Recipe breakdown: 1.30 cu yds topsoil (50%), 0.78 cu yds compost (30%), and 0.52 cu yds peat/coir (20%). Equals thirty-six 2-cu-ft bags total.

2. Three 4×4 Square Foot Gardening Beds (8 inches deep) with Mel's Mix

Single bed area = 16 sq ft. Depth = 8 ÷ 12 = 0.667 ft. Single volume = 10.67 cu ft. For 3 beds: 32.0 cu ft. With 10% settling: 35.2 cu ft (1.30 cubic yards). Split equally: 11.7 cu ft compost, 11.7 cu ft peat moss, and 11.7 cu ft coarse vermiculite (approx. six 2-cu-ft bags of each ingredient).

Common Raised Bed Soil Mistakes

  • Lining the bottom of an open-ground bed with plastic: Impervious plastic prevents excess water from draining and stops deep vegetable roots from reaching native subsoil minerals. Use cardboard or breathable landscape fabric instead to block weeds while allowing water infiltration.
  • Under-filling beds and leaving high shadow walls: Filling a 12-inch bed only 6 inches deep causes the tall wooden sidewalls to cast shade on small seedlings, stunting growth and restricting air circulation.
  • Using unaged horse manure or fresh sawdust: Fresh high-carbon woody bedding draws existing nitrogen out of the soil to decompose, turning tomato and pepper leaves pale yellow. Always use fully cured, mature compost.
