How to calculate potting soil for pots, planters & grow bags
Container gardening places roots in a confined ecosystem with a restricted reservoir of air, water, and nutrients. Unlike ground soil, potting media in containers must balance high water retention with rapid gravitational drainage. Estimating potting mix volume accurately ensures your containers are filled to the optimal planting depth without running short or wasting expensive soil-less media.
Standard Nursery Pot Sizes & True Soil Volume
In the horticultural industry, nursery pots are traditionally sold by "Trade Gallon" numbers (#1, #3, #5, #10), which are actually 20% to 30% smaller than true liquid US gallons:

Why Tapered Pots Require Frustum Math
Most terracotta and plastic pots are narrower at the base than at the top rim to facilitate stacking and plant un-potting. If you calculate volume using only the top rim diameter, you will overestimate soil volume by 15% to 25%.
For round pots, enter the optional Base Diameter and the calculator switches to the exact conical frustum formula: V = (π × h ÷ 3) × (R₁² + R₁·R₂ + R₂²), where R₁ is the top radius, R₂ is the bottom base radius, and h is the soil fill depth. Why Garden Topsoil Fails in Containers
Never use native yard topsoil in pots or containers. In open ground, gravitational water drains freely through deep subsoil layers. In a shallow pot, water forms a perched water table at the bottom drainage holes. Heavy mineral topsoil turns into dense, airless mud that suffocates root hairs and causes root rot (pythium).

Three Worked Examples
1. Five 10-Gallon Fabric Grow Bags (16" Diameter × 14" Height)
Radius = 8 in. Fill depth (leaving 1" rim) = 13 in. Single bag volume = π × 8² × 13 = 2,613.8 cu in = 1.51 cu ft (42.8 Liters). For 5 grow bags: 1.51 × 5 = 7.55 cu ft. With four 2-cubic-foot bags of potting mix, you will fill all 5 bags perfectly with minimal excess.
2. Three Tapered Terracotta Planters (14" Top, 10" Base, 12" Height)
Top radius R₁ = 7 in, base radius R₂ = 5 in, soil depth = 11 in. Frustum volume = (π × 11 ÷ 3) × (7² + 7×5 + 5²) = 11.52 × (49 + 35 + 25) = 1,255.6 cu in = 0.727 cu ft (20.6 Liters) per pot. For 3 pots: 2.18 cu ft (approx. one 2-cu-ft bag + one small 8-quart bag).
3. Window Box Planter (36" Long × 8" Wide × 7" Deep)
Filled 6 inches deep: Volume = 36 × 8 × 6 = 1,728 cu in = 1.00 cu ft (28.3 Liters or 30 US Quarts). Exactly one standard 1-cubic-foot bag of moisture-retaining container mix.
Common Container Soil Mistakes
- The "gravel in the bottom of the pot" myth: Adding gravel or broken pottery shards does NOT improve drainage; physics proves it raises the perched water table higher up into the root zone. Fill the pot with uniform potting mix from bottom to top.
- Filling soil to the very top rim: Leaving zero headspace causes water and liquid fertilizer to spill over the edge during watering rather than soaking down through the root ball. Leave 1 to 1.5 inches of headspace.
- Reusing diseased old potting soil without amending: Used container soil becomes depleted of minerals and biologically tired. Rejuvenate old mix by sifting out dead roots and blending in 30% fresh compost, worm castings, and organic fertilizer.
