Understanding soil pH: chemistry, nutrients & plant health
Soil pH is the single most critical chemical property governing garden productivity. It measures the concentration of active hydrogen ions (H⁺) in the soil solution on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 14. Because the scale is logarithmic, a soil with a pH of 5.0 is 10 times more acidic than a soil at pH 6.0, and 100 times more acidic than pH 7.0.
How Soil pH Controls Nutrient Availability
Even if your soil contains abundant nitrogen, phosphorus, and trace minerals, plants cannot absorb them if soil pH locks them into insoluble chemical compounds:

Target pH Ranges for Common Garden Crops
- Acid-Loving Specialists (pH 4.5 to 5.5)
- Blueberries, cranberries, lingonberries, azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, hydrangeas (blue flowers), and potatoes (prevents common scab disease).
- General Vegetables & Fruiting Crops (pH 6.0 to 6.8)
- Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, beans, peas, carrots, corn, strawberries, raspberries, fruit trees, and turfgrass lawns.
- Alkaline-Tolerant Plants (pH 6.5 to 7.8)
- Asparagus, spinach, beets, brassicas (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower—helps suppress clubroot disease), clematis, and lilacs.
How to Adjust Soil pH Naturally
- To Raise Acidic Soil: Apply agricultural limestone (calcium carbonate) or dolomitic limestone (calcium + magnesium). Limestone neutralizes active hydrogen ions into water and carbon dioxide.
- To Lower Alkaline Soil: Apply 90% elemental sulfur or aluminum sulfate. Soil *Thiobacillus* bacteria oxidize sulfur into sulfuric acid over 2 to 4 months, naturally releasing locked-up iron and zinc.
- Add mature compost as a buffer: Humus has an exceptional buffering capacity, cushioning plant roots against sudden pH swings and maximizing microbial enzymatic activity.
Three Worked Examples
1. Tomato Raised Bed (100 sq ft) Testing at pH 5.2
Target: Raise pH to 6.5 (+1.3 pH units) to avoid blossom-end rot. Loam soil requires approx. 5 lbs limestone per 100 sq ft per 1.0 pH shift. Total lime needed = 5 × 1.3 = 6.5 lbs Agricultural Limestone. Work into the top 6 inches in early spring.
2. Blueberry Bed (300 sq ft) Lowering Neutral Soil from pH 7.2 to 5.0
Target: Lower pH by 2.2 units. Sandy loam requires approx. 1.5 lbs elemental sulfur per 100 sq ft per 1.0 pH drop. Total sulfur per 100 sq ft = 1.5 × 2.2 = 3.3 lbs. For 300 sq ft: 3.3 × 3 = 9.9 lbs Elemental Sulfur. Incorporate in fall and mulch with pine needles and peat.
3. Brassica Garden Bed (500 sq ft) at pH 5.8 (Clubroot Prevention)
Target: Raise pH from 5.8 to 7.0 (+1.2 pH shift) to suppress clubroot fungus. Silt loam requires 7 lbs lime per 100 sq ft per 1.0 pH unit. Total lime = 7 × 1.2 × 5 = 42 lbs Calcitic Lime.
Common Soil pH Mistakes
- Trusting cheap two-prong analog probes: Inexpensive probe meters rely on weak galvanic current and often read 7.0 regardless of actual soil acidity. Use a calibrated digital meter, liquid test kit, or lab testing.
- Expecting gypsum to change soil pH: Gypsum is calcium sulfate (CaSO₄). It provides calcium and sulfur, but has zero acid-neutralizing carbonate power and will not shift soil pH.
- Applying fast-acting hydrated lime: Hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide) is caustic, burns skin, and can spike pH too rapidly, killing beneficial soil life. Always choose gentle ground agricultural limestone (calcium carbonate).
