Because 1 acre equals 43,560 square feet (or 6,272,640 square inches), agronomists calculate theoretical crop stand density with the standard equation:

Plants per Acre = 6,272,640 ÷ [Row Spacing (inches) × In-Row Plant Spacing (inches)]

Plants per Hectare = 100,000,000 ÷ [Row Spacing (cm) × In-Row Plant Spacing (cm)]

Common Population Calculation Mistakes

  • Pushing dryland plant populations too high: Increasing corn population beyond 26,000 on un-irrigated dry soils during summer heat causes moisture stress that results in completely barren cobs without grain fill. Match stand density to available water.
