Simply dividing total bed area by plant spacing results in severe crop shortages because laboratory germination test rates, damping-off fungi, rough field seedbed conditions, and seedling thinning diminish final stand survival.

Agronomists size seed purchases by compounding laboratory germination rates with expected field emergence factors:
Target Plant Stand = Total Row Length (in) ÷ In-Row Spacing (in)
Total Seeds to Purchase = Target Plant Stand ÷ [Germination Rate (decimal) × Field Emergence Factor (decimal)]
Example: Needing 100 mature tomato plants from seed with 85% germination and 90% seedling nursery survival: 100 ÷ (0.85 × 0.90) = 131 seeds (purchase two 75-seed packets).

Common Seed Sizing & Planting Mistakes
- Sowing old onion and parsnip seed from previous seasons: Allium and Umbelliferae seeds degrade rapidly; second-year onion germination frequently drops below 25%. Always purchase fresh onion and parsnip seed annually.
