How this is worked out

Positions = (Length / Plant Spacing) × (Width / Row Spacing) · Raw Seeds = Positions × Seeds per Hole · Adjusted = CEILING(Raw Seeds / (Germ% × Viability%)) · Final = CEILING(Adjusted × (1 + Extra%))

Seed counts and packet purchases are strictly rounded UP to the nearest whole integer. Unit conversions use exact constants (1 m = 3.28084 ft, 1 lb = 453.592 g, 1 oz = 28.3495 g).

Assumptions

  • Row planting calculates positions along rows and across row spacing; Grid planting arranges seeds in equidistant squares.
  • Germination rate compensates for non-viable seeds (e.g. 85% germination requires 1 / 0.85 = +17.6% more seeds).
  • Seeds per hole (e.g. 2-3 seeds per position for corn or squash) multiplies base planting positions before germination adjustment.
  • Custom seed packet specifications (spacing, seeds/gram, germination %) override default crop database values when entered.

How to calculate seed quantities: germination loss, spacing & packet counts

Calculating seed requirements for a home garden, commercial market farm, or greenhouse nursery requires accounting for real-world biological losses. Simply dividing total bed area by plant spacing results in severe crop shortages because laboratory germination test rates, damping-off fungi, rough field seedbed conditions, and seedling thinning diminish final stand survival.

The Seed Requirement & Field Survival Formula

Agronomists size seed purchases by compounding laboratory germination rates with expected field emergence factors:

Target Plant Stand = Total Row Length (in) ÷ In-Row Spacing (in)

Total Seeds to Purchase = Target Plant Stand ÷ [Germination Rate (decimal) × Field Emergence Factor (decimal)]

Example: Needing 100 mature tomato plants from seed with 85% germination and 90% seedling nursery survival: 100 ÷ (0.85 × 0.90) = 131 seeds (purchase two 75-seed packets).

Three Worked Seed Sizing Examples

1. Commercial 100-Foot Direct-Seeded Carrot Bed (3 Rows per Bed)

300 total linear feet of row. Target final stand: 30 carrots per foot (9,000 mature carrots). Standard raw carrot germination: 80%, field emergence: 75%. Total seeds to sow = 9,000 ÷ (0.80 × 0.75) = 15,000 seeds (approx. 0.65 oz / 18.5 grams).

2. Raised Bed Bush Green Beans (4 ft × 8 ft Bed — 6" Grid)

Bed area = 32 sq ft. At 4 plants per sq ft (6" spacing) = 128 plant sites. With 90% bean germination and 2 seeds sown per station: 128 × 2 = 256 seeds needed. At 100 seeds/oz: 2.56 ounces of bean seed.

3. Greenhouse Nursery Cell-Trays (Ten 72-Cell Flat Trays = 720 Seedlings)

Target: 720 healthy sweet pepper transplants. With 85% germination, single-seeding yields 612 seedlings (108 empty cells). Double-seeding 720 cells requires 1,440 seeds (approx. 0.32 oz) and guarantees 98%+ tray cell fill after thinning.

Common Seed Sizing & Planting Mistakes

  • Sowing old onion and parsnip seed from previous seasons: Allium and Umbelliferae seeds degrade rapidly; second-year onion germination frequently drops below 25%. Always purchase fresh onion and parsnip seed annually.
  • Failing to store seeds under the "Rule of 100": Seed vigor declines when storage conditions exceed: Storage Temp (°F) + Relative Humidity (%) > 100. Store seeds at 45°F and 30% RH (Sum = 75) with silica gel.
  • Neglecting to thin direct-seeded root crops: Direct-sowing carrots and beets heavily without aggressively thinning to 2 to 3-inch intervals creates crowded, tangled, unmarketable root knots.

Common questions

Why does the calculator recommend more seeds than there are planting holes?

Not every seed germinates. If a crop has an 85% germination rate and you plant 2 seeds per hole, you need ~2.35 seeds per hole to guarantee a healthy seedling. The calculator accounts for germination rate, viability, and thinning to ensure you buy enough seed.

How does Row Planting differ from Grid Planting?

Row Planting accounts for wide walkways between rows (e.g. 18-24 in row spacing for 3-4 in plant spacing). Grid Planting arranges plants in equal spacing in both directions, typical for raised beds and square-foot gardening.

How many seeds are in a standard seed packet?

Seed packet counts vary wildly by crop size. Tiny seeds like lettuce, carrots, or petunias often contain 250 to 1,000+ seeds per packet (0.5-2 grams). Large seeds like beans, peas, or corn typically contain 25 to 100 seeds per packet (15-50 grams).

Why are seed requirements rounded UP?

You cannot purchase or sow a fraction of a seed or packet. Rounding up guarantees you never run short during planting or replanting after unexpected weather losses.
